என்று எழுதிய முகூர்த்த விசேஷம், தகவல்களாய் வந்து கொட்டுகின்றன. முடிந்தவரை எனக்கு வந்த அனைத்தையும் எல்லோருக்கும் பயன்படக்கூடும் என்கிற எதிர்பார்ப்பில் இங்கே தொகுக்கிறேன். குறிப்பாக,

(இதை Ganesh S என்கிற ட்விட்டர் அளித்திருக்கிறார் அவருக்கு சிறப்பு நன்றி) எஸ்.ரா தம் காலட்சேபத்தில் க்குறியதுபோல் ஏன் காந்தியும் டால்ஸ்டாயும் கடிதங்களில் எழுதிக்கொள்ளவில்லை என்பது படிக்கிற வாசகனுக்கு வியப்பளிக்கக்கூடும்தானில்லையா?
காந்தி - டால்ஸ்டாய் மூலகடிதங்களைப் பிரசுரித்ததோடு மட்டுமின்றி, அவை எழுதப்பட நேர்ந்த பின்னணி, அவை காந்தியிடம் உண்டாக்கிய தாக்கங்கள் இவை பற்றிய தகவல்களை எங்கெங்கிருந்து பயன்படுத்தினார் என்பது பற்றி புத்தகத்தின் இறுதியில் கொடுத்திருக்கும் குறிப்புகளையும் பாருங்கள். இவைதான் புத்தகத்தின் முழுமையையும் நம்பகத் தன்மையின் கதிர்களையும் வீசியவண்ணம் நிற்கின்றன. இதுபோன்ற ஆன்மீக மேட்டர்களைப் படிப்பதில் ரஜினி சாருக்கு நெம்ப ஈடுபாடு. என் கவலையெல்லாம் தமிழ் நண்டுகளைப் பற்றிதான். எதாவது ஒரு நண்டு 02.02.2012க்குள் அவரிடம் எஸ்.ராவின் இந்த அல்லோல கல்லோலத்தைப் போட்டுக்கொடுத்துவிடுமோ என்பதுதான் என் கவலை.
எந்தத் தீவிரமான காரியத்திகும் அடிப்படை அம்சமாக இருக்கவேண்டிய இந்தன் நம்பகத்தன்மை, தமிழ்ச்சூழலில் எத்துனைப் புத்தகங்களில் இருக்கிறது என்று எண்ணிவிடலாம். ஆராய்ச்சியாளர்களைத் தவிர்த்து, எழுத்தாளர்கள் எழுதிய புத்தகங்கள் எனில் போனால் போகிறது என்று பொத்தாம் பொதுவாகத் தகவல்கள் கொடுப்பதோடு சரி. வாசகன் மூலப்புத்தகங்களைப் படித்தால் அண்ணாமார்கள் அரைகுறையாக மொழிபெயர்த்திருக்கிறார்கள் அல்லது மூல ஆசிரியன் ஆகக்குறைந்த வரிகளில் சொல்லிச் சென்றிருப்பதை இவர்கள் விரித்து வியாக்கியானமாய் எழுதி இருக்கிறார்கள் என்கிற குட்டு வெளிப்பட்டுவிடாதா?
இவர்களையெல்லாம் ஆளுமைகள் என்று கொண்டாடும் குட்டைத் தவளைக் கூட்டத்தைத்தான் சொல்லவேண்டும். குறைந்தபட்சம் இந்தத் தவளைகளாவது தமது பிரிய எழுத்தாளரிடம் சொல்லக்கூடாதா? ஐயா டவுன்லோட் மற்றும் காப்பி பேஸ்ட் செய்வதுதான் செய்கிறீர்கள், குறைந்தபட்சம் மூலத்தைத்தேடி அதிலிருந்து காப்பி பேஸ்ட் செய்து

The relevant part is this from the last letter
"The longer I live-especially now when I clearly feel the approach of death-the more I feel moved to express what I feel more strongly than anything else, and what in my opinion is of immense importance, namely, what we call the renunciation of all opposition by force, which really simply means the doctrine of the law of love unperverted by sophistries. Love, or in other words the striving of men's souls towards unity and the submissive behaviour to one another that results therefrom, represents the highest and indeed the only law of life, as every man knows and feels in the depths of his heart (and as we see most clearly in children), and knows until he becomes involved in the lying net of worldly thoughts. This law was announced by all the philosophies- Indian as well as Chinese, and Jewish, Greek and Roman."
ஒரு இந்தியர் எழுதிய கடிதம் என்ற மரியாதைக்காக டால்ஸ்டாய் இந்திய தத்துவம் என்ற வார்த்தையை சேர்க்கப் போய் அது இன்று திருக்குறளாக மாறி விட்டது.

Further to my previous mail, a little more digging led to this. Taraknath Das, editor of Free Hindustan wrote to Tolstoy in 1908 to which Tolstoy replied back with a famous letter "A Letter to a Hindoo"
In it, before every chapter, Tolstoy quotes Indian scriptures - including Vedas, Upanishad and Kural too (which he calls Hindu Kural). Nowhere does he mention that he learnt Ahimsa from Kural.
Gandhi received a copy of this letter and wrote to Tolstoy to verify its genuineness (unlike our modern day Socrates) and asked for permission to print it in his magazine in South Africa. Tolstoy agreed and Gandhi printed this letter with an introduction of his own.
